Gov. Jeb Bush will lead a delegation of Florida business and government officials to Ecuador and Peru on a mission to solidify business ties and promote free trade.
Bush also will use the trip, which starts Tuesday, to promote Miami as the future headquarters of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the U.S.-backed proposal for a hemisphere-wide trading bloc that has stalled as a result of fierce resistance from some Latin American countries.
…y un poco mas de lere lere…
Bush had planned to go to Peru in August, but canceled the trip as Hurricane Katrina threatened Florida.
The governor, the younger brother of President Bush, has lead several trade missions to foreign countries, accompanying Florida business leaders in an effort to attract business to the state and to help Florida companies establish foreign markets and partnerships.
Among the items on the agenda for the Florida delegation this week is a scheduled meeting with Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo.
Ecuador and Peru combined traded about $2.4 billion in goods combined with Florida in 2004, according to federal government data.
Bush has been trying to persuade Latin American nations to back Miami as the home base for the FTAA. But talks for forming the area have hit numerous roadblocks and little progress has been made since a January 2005 deadline for its creation passed.
Bush has previously gone to several other Latin American nations, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Uruguay.
President Bush earlier this month notified Congress of his plan to sign a trade agreement with Peru, but talks on a wider, region-wide agreement that would have included Colombia and Ecuador broke down.
