Tweets in Google. First step towards the integration of PPC and Social Media

logogoogleMildly surprised that Twitter inked a deal with Google. Finally. But what does it mean to all the companies that are doing search engine marketing and in the past have been social media shy? For one, it legitimizes tweets as a valid source of information as now those tweets will be able to be found in Google and Bing.

It is too early to know what the impact on PPC and SEO would be but one thing is very clear. The power of the real-time stream is here to stay and to provide a much needed real-time human context to search engine results. Maybe after all you will be able to reply to search engine results.

Here is an excerpt of the Google announcement:

Given this new type of information and its value to search, we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results. We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months. That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you’ll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.
